One of these green sources is hydro-electricity. The Barron Falls, located in the Barron Gorge National Park, provides 60 megawatts of green power to the surrounding area. Since 1906, engineers took interest in the immense power of the falls, and in 1935 a turbine was set up that could harness it’s power and generate 3.8 megawatts of electricity.
It was Australia’s first underground power station and remained in operation until 1958. In 1963, the Barron Gorge hydroelectric power station was built. The two-generator facility was capable of generating 30 megawatts. Today, Barron Gorge Hydro produces 60 megawatts of clean, green power for the Cairns community, resulting in a saving of 260,000 tonnes of carbon each year.
The Koombooloomba Hydro station on the Atherton Tablelands provides a further 7 megawatts of clean, green electricity using the waters of Koombooloomba Dam. The station saves around 20,000 tonnes of greenhouses gases every year and the water then flows into the Tully River, where it is captured a second time at the Kareeya Hydro station. The Kareeya Hydro Power Station provides an additional 86 megawatts of clean energy into the region, saving an additional 540,000 tonnes of carbon every year.
On the Atherton Tablelands, near Ravenshoe, the Windy Hill Wind Farm is in operation, providing an addition green power source for North Queensland. Windy Hill is Queensland’s largest wind farm, with 20 windmills providing 12 megawatts of electricity: enough to provide power for 3500 homes.
With all of these green power sources already in operation, North Queensland has the ability to become one of the most sustainable regions in Australia. The Stiebel Eltron Heat Pump is proven superior German technology and is the most efficient domestic heat pump on the market. The heat pump absorbs the heat from the ambient air, which is then transferred to the refrigerant within the heat pump. The refrigerant is compressed, which heats it to a high temperature. It is this heat that is transferred into the water to provide hot water. It works on similar principles as an air-conditioner but in reverse. 68% less electricity is required to provide hot water compared to a standard electric system. The heat pump is also much cheaper to install than a solar hot water system.
