Cairns Solar

NQ Solar is based in Cairns, North Queensland, and specialises in clean, green, renewable power for your home or business. We sell photovoltaic grid connect solar power systems, stand-alone solar systems, hot water heat pumps, generators, regulators, and anything else required for small to large energy systems.

Cairns is a city of approximately 130,000 residents, nestled on a thin coastal strip between the World Heritage listed Wet Tropics rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef. With its astounding natural beauty, warm tropical climate, and friendly, relaxed atmosphere, Cairns is a traditional tourism hub and attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world every year. Cairns is also an excellent place to live and offers a pleasant lifestyle for it’s residents, so it’s no wonder hundreds of people choose to relocate to the region each year.

With an increasing population and growing building industry, solar power makes perfect sense for Cairns’ future. In fact, the region has a strong history of environmentally friendly, sustainable electricity generation and has utilised green power sources since the early 1900’s.

One of these green sources is hydro-electricity. The Barron Falls, located in the Barron Gorge National Park, provides 60 megawatts of green power to the surrounding area. Since 1906, engineers took interest in the immense power of the falls, and in 1935 a turbine was set up that could harness it’s power and generate 3.8 megawatts of electricity.
It was Australia’s first underground power station and remained in operation until 1958. In 1963, the Barron Gorge hydroelectric power station was built. The two-generator facility was capable of generating 30 megawatts. Today, Barron Gorge Hydro produces 60 megawatts of clean, green power for the Cairns community, resulting in a saving of 260,000 tonnes of carbon each year.

The Koombooloomba Hydro station on the Atherton Tablelands provides a further 7 megawatts of clean, green electricity using the waters of Koombooloomba Dam. The station saves around 20,000 tonnes of greenhouses gases every year and the water then flows into the Tully River, where it is captured a second time at the Kareeya Hydro station. The Kareeya Hydro Power Station provides an additional 86 megawatts of clean energy into the region, saving an additional 540,000 tonnes of carbon every year.
On the Atherton Tablelands, near Ravenshoe, the Windy Hill Wind Farm is in operation, providing an addition green power source for North Queensland. Windy Hill is Queensland’s largest wind farm, with 20 windmills providing 12 megawatts of electricity: enough to provide power for 3500 homes.

With all of these green power sources already in operation, North Queensland has the ability to become one of the most sustainable regions in Australia. If every home contributed to the green power movement by installing a small or large scale solar power system, installing energy-efficient water heating technology like a Stiebel Eltron hot water heat pump, and reducing the amount of power they use around the home, the city of Cairns could dramatically reduce its reliance on coal-fired power and establish a clean, green, sustainable region to live in.

NQ Solar can help Cairns and North Queensland residents and business with any enquiry into solar electricity. We specialise in photovoltaic grid connect systems and stand-alone solar systems.

Grid Connect solar systems are now more affordable than ever, and with generous Government incentives now available, it’s never been easier to cut your family’s carbon footprint, as well as your quarterly power bill. The Solar Credits Scheme provides generous upfront discounts on the installation of solar power, based on the value of Small-scale Technology Certificates. The scheme is NOT means tested, and is available for residential, commercial and investment properties. To find out how you can take advantage of the incentives on offer and begin generating your own clean, green energy, call NQ Solar today!

A hot water heat pump can help you save up to 68% off your hot water heating costs. At NQ Solar, we sell the Stiebel Eltron heat pump.

The Stiebel Eltron Heat Pump is proven superior German technology and is the most efficient domestic heat pump on the market. The heat pump absorbs the heat from the ambient air, which is then transferred to the refrigerant within the heat pump. The refrigerant is compressed, which heats it to a high temperature. It is this heat that is transferred into the water to provide hot water. It works on similar principles as an air-conditioner but in reverse. 68% less electricity is required to provide hot water compared to a standard electric system. The heat pump is also much cheaper to install than a solar hot water system.
